Gaable or Roof Attic Fans

Gaable or Roof Attic Fans

An attic fan is an exhaust fan installed in your roof or gable wall that pulls hot, humid air out of your attic and expels it outdoors. Regulating attic temperature and moisture can reduce strain on your air conditioning system and prolong the life of your roof.

Attic fans are mechanical ventilation systems used to exhaust hot air and moisture from your attic, extending roof lifespan and lowering cooling costs. The main types of attic fans are classified by their power source and mounting locations.

Powered Electric Attic Fans

Electric attic fans draw power from your home to forcefully exhaust hot air from your attic. They pull cooler outside air through your soffits, preventing heat from radiating down into your living space.

Roof-Mount Fans: Installed directly on the roof deck, these fans are usually covered by a protective dome. They require cutting a hole in your shingles, but are highly effective at reaching the highest point of the attic.

Gable-Mount Fans: Installed entirely from inside the attic, these are mounted directly behind existing gable louvers. They are very popular for retrofits because they don’t require cutting into the roof, making them a great DIY project.

Smart Attic Fans

Smart fans are premium versions of electric models that feature built-in sensors, thermostats, and humidistats, and are paired with smartphone applications.

Control: You can monitor attic temperature and humidity in real time from your phone.

Energy Efficiency: They often feature variable-speed Electronically Commutated Motors (ECM) that self-adjust to maintain optimal conditions while consuming minimal electricity.

Benefits of Gaable or Roof Attic Fans

Lower Cooling Costs: By removing superheated air, less radiant heat transfers down into your living space. This takes the strain off your air conditioning system.

Extended Roof Life: Extreme attic heat can literally “bake” asphalt shingles, and trapped moisture can rot wood roof decking. Proper ventilation equalizes temperatures and keeps the roof structure sound.

Moisture and Mold Prevention: In cooler months, warm air rising from the house can condense in the attic. Active ventilation clears this humid air, preventing wood rot, mold, and mildew.

Preserved Insulation R-Value: Moisture-laden air degrades the efficiency of attic insulation. Keeping the attic dry ensures your existing insulation performs exactly as intended.
